Going Green in Sports

As January comes to a close and February begins, there is typically one event on everyone’s mind: The Super Bowl.  Leading up to the Super Bowl, the media has covered everything from Peyton Manning’s neck injury to the Giants’ pizza delivery from Brooklyn.  Surprisingly, we’ve also been hearing about the Super Bowl going green.  This has been a welcomed trend in many professional sports. NASCAR recently announced its green sponsorship with its field cars, and solar paneling is being erected in many Major League Baseball stadiums throughout the country.

In my opinion, the NFL's green initiative will make a huge impact, and it would also encourage other organizations to follow suit.  This year, the NFL partnered with Green Mountain Energy, the country's largest provider of clean energy.  It will provide 15,000,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy to the Super Bowl.  This amount of energy would be able to provide power to roughly 87,000 homes for the entire Super Bowl week.

What would make the NFL do something like this?  It's not like they're worried about viewership for this:  the most watched broadcast of the year.  Maybe the NFL just thinks it is the right thing to do, which is fine by me.  I hope to see wind turbines atop stadiums everywhere, and if the NFL can provide that, then they will have set an example for clubs and sports teams throughout the world.
